Hi Club Members,

The year is flying by and it is time for another newsletter to capture goings on at the club.

Recent events include the Club Champs and Annual Prizegiving which was held from Wednesday 4th October to Sat 7th October with the Prizegiving held along with a 3 course meal on the Sat night. We had 44 entries to the Club Champs with some great battles had! It was great to have a tournament just for our members and even though no grading points were involved it was still a serious affair. Hopefully next year we might be in the new club! A big thank you to Adam/Matt and others for organising the Club Champs. See the results below.

Congratulations to Lawrence Skurr for being awarded the Rob Roche Trophy at the National Masters event recently for dedication and commitment to Masters Squash over the years. Well done Lawrence.

We have had an update from Jackson Beresford who is playing squash in the UK.

I arrived in Harrogate on the 23rd September living with the Harrogate squash club gym manager. The trip has been split up into two parts, the first month or so has been focused on training, gaming, mobility and playing league matches, and the second consisting of trains and tournaments.

I have won all of my league matches so far and am playing for 3 different clubs in 3 different leagues. The highlight of the trip by far is training and playing a full match against world no.4 Nick Matthew. I lost in 3 but was pleased with how I played and picked up a few nuggets from Nick and his coach Dave Pearson.

The second part of the trip is about to commence with my first tournament in Wimbledon, the next is in Lee-on-the-Solent, then Canterbury and finally Boston. I am excited to finally get some tournaments underway and see if all the work I have put in has paid off!

Cashmere Club Update

The new club build process is really starting to gather momentum with the 1st Stage Tender Pricing due in this Fri 10th November. The committee and other club members are very busy with a number of key activities such as identifying and pursing Funding Opportunites and guiding the Building Design and Construction so the members get the best facility possible.

There is a lot of work to do over the coming 6-7 months when we should commence the build. If you think you can assist in any way please get in touch. The below picture is the most up to date layout for the club.

Spring Interclub

We are the 3rd week into Spring Interclub for Womens, Mens and Juniors and finals night will be either Dec 4th, 5th or 11th depending on which competition you are playing in. A reminder that all Interclub players are required to wear a club T-Shirt when playing Interclub. There are some available at the club for purchase, with a full range available at Anderson & Hill.

Entries have closed and the first week of Pennant kicks off this week, have fun all involved :-)

South City Micro Court Promotion

In the last school holidays Tim McVee setup and ran the micro court for 2 days at the South City mall. It was very worthwhile with a lot of interest and we had 7 taking up a junior membership. Well done Tim.

Foundation Membership

The committee is currently developing the details around a Foundation Membership for the new club. This is an exciting opportunity for current members but also others to contribute to a fantastic new facility for Christchurch, Canterbury and New Zealand. Details of options and how you can be part of this will follow over the next few weeks.

AGM - Wed 6th October

We would like to announce that the AGM is coming up in early next month and we would like to encourage as many people as possible to attend and participate. We have had a couple of resignations at the last committee meeting and will be on the look out for some new people to join the committee.

CHRISTCHURCH SQUASH CLUB COMMITTEE

Welcome folks, to the Annual Club Champs!(There will be no grading points involved in this) Wednesday (4th Oct) to Saturday (7th Oct), with a 5pm evening finish.(Wednesday will be used for people who want to have earlier games)

Play for fun, play for pride and play for the bragging rights! Socialise and meet people from the club you have never met before. The bar will be OPEN on all competition days!

Format: Open Men & Women + Graded Divisions (A-J, if possible) All players are guaranteed a minimum of three games! Swiss draw format & depending on player numbers

Hi Club Members,

Winter has been a busy time for the club, and we are now looking forward to the arrival of Spring!

Recent events include a quickfire 14:3 event on Queens Birthday weekend with 24 participants, thanks Ruby for organising this. The Canterbury Open, Tri Series #2 was held in early June where we had 99 people playing. The committee noted that a huge effort goes running an event like this and we need to ensure the club is getting the most out of it. A couple of weeks later 22-25 June we hosted the Canterbury U23 and Masters combined event. We had a total of 66 entries. A big thank you to Adam and his team for organising these tournaments.

Boxed 4 continues to attract new entrants and connect members, with many people enjoying this alternative competition.

Cashmere Club Update

The Concept Plans have now been signed off by the Committee. Agreements with the Architect and Project Manager for the new club have also been signed off. The next major milestone is completion of the Developed Design. See the awesome 3D impression below!

Bar -IMPORTANT

When serving behind the bar, please ensure you are serving someone who is playing or supporting the club or player. Members of the public are NOT ALLOWED to be served alcohol. If in doubt please ask their association before serving them. We can potentially get a large fine if we don't follow our license rules.

Winter Interclub

We are approaching the end of Winter Interclub having 1 more week of round robin, followed by 3 weeks of playoffs with the finals on 25/26th September. A reminder that all Interclub players are required to wear a club T-Shirt when playing Interclub. There are some available at the club for purchase, with a full range available at Anderson & Hill.

New Membership Structure

Billboard Advertising

For the month of August we have had a billboard located on Fitzgerald Avenue near the corner of Moorhouse and Fitzgerald Avenues. We are hoping this will promote squash in the Christchurch and boost our membership. The billboard skin can be moved to other locations around the city.

Car Park Incident (Broken Window)

An incident occurred last Monday evening (28.08.17) during interclub between the hours of 7pm - 10pm. A member of another squash club had his driver's side window smashed by a rock. Fortunately, nothing was stolen. His vehicle is a white Nissan Vanette.

Champion of Champions Event

Our next upcoming event is Squash Canterburys “Champion of Champions” Tournament on 21-23rd September. If you would like to see if you could be the best Male or Female player in Canterbury for your grade, with the opportunity to represent Canterbury at the National Final….then this is for you. Club Champs 5-7th October

We are very happy to announce that our Club Champs will be held in early October. We encourage all members to enter as this is a real fun event. It will consist of an Open Mens and Womens grade with Graded Divisions. There will be NO Grading points for this event. The tournament will finish by 5pm on Saturday followed by a 3 course meal and our Annual Prize Giving.

Hi Club Members,

It continues to be busy around the club with nearly 40 people playing the Thursday Autumn Pennant and tomorrow we have 48 entries for the Junior D and below Junior Series. Autumn Interclub is well underway and finishes up on July 3-4. Boxed 4 continues to attract new entrants and connect members, with many people enjoying this alternative competition.

There is no interclub on Queens Birthday weekend but we do have a 14:3 quick fire competition on Monday 5th June. See iSquash for details.

Another special thanks goes to Phil Tough this month for repainting all of the courts. They were painted with Resene Squash Court Coating 2 pack waterborne epoxy and they certainly look a load better. Please ensure tape on your racquet head is white or clear to avoid the marks as seen in the photo below.

An agreement between Cashmere WMC and Christchurch SC has been reached and a Special General meeting to present the agreement to the Cashmere WMC members will be held at the Cashmere WMC on Sunday 25th June 2017. We will have our Special General Meeting on the following Wednesday 5th July 2017. We will aim to have an information pack available for Christchurch SC members by Wednesday 14th June 2017.

The benefits of our new structure is that there is less admin for the club, consistent cash flow, month x month option for members and interclub fees are now incorporated in all memberships with the exception of our Corporate Membership.

The squash season for 2017 is now underway with the first round earlier this week.

The BOXED4 monthly competition has also begun and those playing have been sent the draw plus contact of those to play.

The 14.3 Waitangi Day Tournament returns and draw closes Thursday 2nd Feb.

At our recent committee meeting the team covered a lot of ground planning more events, the move to Cashmere, funding and focusing on ways in which we can continually deliver a quality squash experience for our members. So please read on as there are significant initiatives coming your way.

CASHMERE PROJECT MOVES ONE STEP CLOSER

The committee decided to enter negotiations of the sale of 182 Chester Street with a developer and we are please to inform you that a conditional contract is now in place.

This is great news for the club as the purchaser is committed to buying our property, but the agreement is conditional upon our club holding a Special General Meeting to confirm which entails finalising the agreement with Cashmere and our ability to fund the entire project.

Prior to entering final negotiations we had obtained a market valuation, engaged an independent Real Estate agent who specialised in inner city apartment's and a sub-committee was formed to implement this process.

The key advantage to this securing this agreement places the club in an extremely strong position to secure additional funding as our overall shortfall will be as little as 10-15% of the project. Ultimately this will increase significantly our chances of obtaining the balance required.

CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP UNDERWAY

Last year the committee decided to activate a corporate membership designed to provide a flexible membership for companies so that their team and family could enjoy our facilities. The only limitation is that players can play during peak times and they are social players only.

Signing up more companies will trigger other events such as a Business House competition and also company team building events.

The aim of this event is to provide playing time flexibility for our members in a social yet organised competition.

So it is really simple, players are placed in a group of 4 and they are required to play each other on or before the last Friday of the month. They can play anytime or at any other venue. Points are given to those who win and at the end of the month the winner of the group moves up to the next group and the bottom player falls to the group below.

On the last Friday of each month we encourage games to be played because the bar will be open so we can all get together for a few refreshments and announce the group winners.

Non Christchurch members are welcome to enter at a cost of $10.00 per month.

- BOXED4 is a social league which is run on a monthly basis for the enjoyment of members

- Matches can be played at any time and should be arranged by the participants directly

- Please make every effort to organise and play all 3 of your games during the month

- The league organisers will not be arranging matches and will not be booking courts

- The BOXED4 League has no impact on participants Squash NZ grading points

- All players will be automatically rolled over to the following months league

- Players who wish to be removed from the next month should contact the league organiser

Promotion or Relegation?

At the end of each monthly league cycle the following relegations/promotions will take place:

League Winner Promoted to League above

2nd and 3rd Place Remain in same league

4th Place Relegated to league below

N.B. Any players not playing a minimum of two matches per league cycle will be dropped.

Exceptions to the above rule are: 1. Injuries 2. Special circumstances sited to the League organiser.

Playing all League games earns 1 extra point.

League Rules

- All matches are best of 5 games PAR 15 scoring

- The player in the lead of an unfinished match shall be declared the winner

- A player who withdraws from a league cycle may not re enter at a higher level

- Please remember the leagues are arranged for the enjoyment of all participants

- Failure to play spoils other people’s pleasure and makes organisation difficult

- It is up to all players to play their matches. If you do not wish to play League squash on a regular basis

- you should withdraw from the Leagues by crossing out your name and notifying the league organiser

NCT APPROVED $200,000 for New Facility!

Yes, this is great news, NZ Community have definitely delivered the Christchurch Squash Club a Christmas present for 2016. There has been significant work completing our funding applications and to receive 100% of the application made is very satisfying for the committee.

Well this will be the last communication from the club for 2016 but is the first linked to our brand new website -A ONE STOP WEBSITE - Check it out!

As we wrap up the year our interclub teams have performed extremely well with Christchurch team featuring in almost all division finals and most winning their final matches.

WOW - Superman PAUL COLL, hasn't Paul made significant progress over the past 2 years claiming his largest PSA event title to date winning the $100K PSA 2016 Channel VAS Championship at St George’s Hill. read more.

Our AGM was held early November and we wish to acknowledge our committee members that have stood down this year and their contributions last year but in a number of cases their contribution over many years. In particular a special mention for Trish Roughan-Smith, Greg Atkins, Christine Cumming and Wayne Smith all whom have been involved at various committee levels including President, Treasurer, Events Management, Tournament Control, Club Captains, Juniors, Ladies Squash, Coaching, Refereeing, Super-champs and organising key Social and Fundraising Events. Others to recognise are Linda Robertson and Jo Nunnerley. for their efforts last year.

Planning For 2017

In preparation for 2017 your committee got together to plan events, membership strategies and generally get ready for the coming year. There are a number of new playing formats we will be introducing to further engage with our members and provide more flexible playing time events to cater for those that can't commit to regular weekly events. Refer below to Box4 Ladder.

2017 will be an exciting year for the club as we continue to grow membership with particular focus towards our Women and Junior Sections and also the introduction of our "Corporate Membership" which we hope add another valuable income stream for the club.

We are in the final stages of negotiating a deal with Cashmere Club which includes lease agreement and formal contractual agreement.

In January the Cashmere Club shall vote at a special general meeting to finalise their acceptance of our club moving on site.
